How do I choose the right interior designer for my Dubai apartment renovation?

Choosing the right interior designer in Dubai starts with their portfolio. Look for completed projects similar to yours in size and style. A designer who specialises in villas may not be the best fit for a compact Dubai Marina apartment. Ask specifically for UAE projects, as local knowledge of suppliers, contractors, and permit requirements matters enormously.

Always verify their trade licence. Ask for their licence number and check it. Some freelance designers operate without proper licensing, which can cause issues if works require municipality approval.

Get at least three quotes with a detailed scope of services. Some designers charge a flat fee, others a percentage of the total project cost (typically 10-15%). Confirm what is included: concept boards, supplier sourcing, site supervision, and snagging are not always part of the base fee.

Ask for client references and follow up. Also confirm who manages the contractors. Some designers provide concepts only and leave you to manage the build. Full-service firms handle everything end to end.

Ask specifically how they handle budget overruns. This is where the quality of the relationship is tested. A good designer will give you a realistic budget range upfront and flag issues early rather than presenting surprises at the end.
