My pool turned green overnight in Dubai — what do I do?
Our villa pool in The Springs has turned green overnight. I've been maintaining it myself with chlorine tablets but clearly something has gone wrong. What causes a pool to turn green so quickly in Dubai and can I fix it myself or do I need a professional?

A green pool in Dubai is almost always caused by algae, triggered by a failure in chlorine levels — either the chlorine has been depleted by Dubai's intense UV radiation, the pH has drifted out of range making chlorine ineffective, or the filter hasn't been running enough. Here's what to do: Test the water first — pH should be 7.2–7.6, free chlorine should be 1–3 ppm. If you can't test, assume both are off. Shock treatment: add a large dose of pool shock (calcium hypochlorite) — 10x the normal dose for a green pool. Run the filter continuously for 24–48 hours. Brush the pool walls and floor to remove algae clinging to surfaces. Add algaecide after shocking. Backwash the filter once the water clears. For a Dubai pool that turns green overnight, the UV radiation is almost certainly burning through your chlorine faster than the tablets can release it. In summer, liquid chlorine or granular shock is more effective than tablets alone. If the pool doesn't clear within 48 hours, call a professional — you may have a filter or pump issue.
